Sichuan's city attraction home to 700 lotus species

Sichuan province, China: If you want to enjoy flowering peony, go to Henan province, but if you want to enjoy the sight of the lotus, come to Sichuan province.

Shenglian Island, situated in the Fujing River, features a vast array of lotus varieties which local people in the centre of Suining city have enjoyed and cherished for thousands of years.

An exotic lotus species planted at the World Lotus Exposition in Sichuan province.

A Sichuan guide Ms Jin, told visiting Asian journalists on Friday, there are about 700 species of lotus planted at Shenglian island.

“Lotus is planted on the island everywhere, especially in the World's Lotus Expo Park,” she said.

Ms Jin added that the island's 700 species of lotus are from 23 countries around the world. A 5-million-year-old sea lily fossil is also displayed at the lotus park museum with the shape of the ancient marine organisms and lotus sharing similarities according to the biological theory; therefore, they have the same biological genes.

It is amazing the fossil is kept in such good condition.

The site is completely a sea of green and Shenglian Island turns into the true heart of Suining city when summer comes. The warmer months see visitors travelling to Shenglian Island for sightseeing admiring the many lotuses and the beautiful skyline of this prosperous city.

The site is well planned with the island divided into an ecological exhibition zone, tourism experience zone, business zone and some other cultural tourism-oriented segments.

It is endeavouring to create a demonstration area for an eco-friendly city, a Guanyin cultural area and a modern garden city exhibition.

The Guanyin-themed cultural tourism brand is being actively cultivated to lure visitors from both home and abroad. Surrounded by a huge water body stretching and linking with business centres in the eastern and western downtown through an underwater tunnel, the island enjoys unique environmental resources.

As the city's heart and the city's green lung, the island strictly observes the principle of environmental protection and controls the height of buildings.
