DHF infects 1,000; kills 5 in Yangon

Myanmar (Eleven) -- Over 1,000 Yangon Region residents were diagnosed with dengue haemorrhagic fever over the past four months and five of them have died, according to the Public Health Department.
The rate of DHF patients in the first four months of 2017 is much higher than in previous years, said the department, adding that the mosquito-borne disease could turn into an outbreak.
Over 200 people were diagnosed with the disease and only four died in the first four months of 2016.
Dr Khin Nan Lon at the department said: “We have a plan to boost anti-mosquito and larvae missions in every township in the region. In the second or third week of every month we will inspect places where mosquitoes can breed and thrive, such as construction sites and tire shops, and where the disease can spread, like schools.”
The mission aims to reduce the instances of DHF and Zika virus infections and educate people in preventive measures. The country experienced DHF outbreaks in 2007, 2011, 2013 and 2015.
