Ministry hails provincial support in promoting khaen heritage

Provincial leaders from across the country visited Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism officials in Vientiane on Wednesday to celebrate the recognition of Khaen music as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco).

The provincial leaders met the Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism, Prof. Dr Bosengkham Vongdara and officials to discuss the sustainable promotion of national culture, especially the Khaen music of the Lao people.
Prof. Dr Bosengkham Vongdara gave special thanks to the leaders for attending the grand parade in acknowledgement of Unesco’s listing of Khaen music.
The leaders also exchanged knowledge with the minister for the preservation of Khaen music such as encouraging teenagers to gain more understanding of Lao culture and the nation’s musical traditions.
Meanwhile, Prof. Dr Bosengkham Vongdara also presented Khaens and certificates of appreciation to the province leaders.
The recognition of Khaen music was made at the twelfth session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage which took place in Jeju Island, Republic of Korea, from December 4-9, 2017.
Following the recognition, Unesco presented the certificate of the Khaen music of the Lao people as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity to the Lao government last month.
